“Earth Hour” shows reduced consumption in Spain
Energy consumption during “Earth Hour” on Saturday, showed a decline of around one percent in electricity consumption, according to sources from the electricity supply company of Spain, the Red Eléctrica de España.
These sources have estimated the decrease of 300 Megawatts of energy consumption during the blackout that lasted for one hour, which occurred in larger cities across Spain.
Buildings such as the Puerta de Alcalá and the Alhambra in Granada, were left in the dark for one hour to raise awareness of the importance of combating climate change, a global initiative by the WWF environmental organization who have gained support from governments and companies across the planet.
“Earth Hour” tries to raise awareness in the population about the threat of climate change and to demonstrate the feasibility of actions, both globally and individually, and how the smallest change can have a huge impact.
The campaign points out that small changes in everyday life, such as replacing light bulbs or fluorescent lights are also crucial.
It is hoped that this event will increase awareness each year and continue to grow, showing increased support for the planet each time.
