A total of 493 beaches and 78 ports have obtained the Blue Flag this year in Spain, an international environmental seal that certifies the compliance of quality criteria such as accessibility, water safety, environmental information to users and respect of the law. However, there is a significant lack of creditation in the Torrevieja area.
The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), responsible for the initiative, has made the list of blue flags public, showing an overall increase of 44 since last summer (38 beaches and 6 ports).
This increase is comparable to the significant drop from 2007 to 2008 in Blue Flags, and is close to Spain to record number of flags collected by Spain, which was in 2007.
