Metal workers clash with police in northwest Spain

Hundreds of striking metal workers have clashed with riot police in a northwestern Spanish port city.

An AP photographer saw workers use slingshots to hurl large steel bolts, or throw them with their hands, and light burning barricades to keep police from breaking up a demonstration in the city of Vigo.

Police fired tear gas and rubber pellets at the workers, many of whom wore handkerchiefs to cover their mouths.

Unions representing some 30,000 metal workers in Vigo and the surrounding province of Pontevedra have been negotiating a new contract with management for weeks.

But talks have deadlocked over wage increases and management withdraw from them on Tuesday. Another strike is scheduled for Thursday.
