Crosby murder suspect on remand in Spanish prison
A MURDER suspect from Crosby is on remand in a Spanish prison accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in a Costa Blanca hotel.
Alleged killer Alan Daulby, 24, is said to have knifed Avril Flanagan, 20, up to 40 times after flying into a rage because she said she was leaving to study in Ireland.
The brutal murder happened in a room at the Playa Marina in the resort of Torrevieja, 30 miles south of Alicante.
At the same time her throat was cut, severing her jugular artery
Daulby, formerly of Blundellsands, went on the run as his father gave authorities his car registration which was promptly sent to all of Spain’s police forces.
A high speed chase by the Guardia Civil ensued 100 miles away in Oliva, near Valencia, where he was eventually arrested.
Irish barmaid Avril was found in a pool of blood on the floor by her mother Barbara, who ran the Smiling Jack’s pub in Cabo Roig with husband Gerry.
Daulby’s parents moved to Spain three years ago after they sold their plush home in Spinney Crescent, Blundellsands, and his father’s Advance Clutches business in Bedford Road, Bootle.
Daulby, an ex-pupil of St Mary’s College, did not stay in Spain and regularly flitted back to Crosby.
He had been seeing Avril for two years but a number of arguments are said to have reached a climax after she said she was going to follow her dream, leave Spain, and study at college in the Republic.
The couple split a week before her death and Spanish police are probing the theory that she was lured to the apartment on the pretext of saying goodbye before she returned home for a friend’s 21st birthday party in Ireland. She died on May 29.
Her parents’ pub has been closed since her death and her body was flown back from Madrid on Monday.
A pub regular said: “Avril was very pretty and nice to everyone but her boyfriend was a very jealous, cold person.”
