Alicante hotel occupancy at 85% for Hogueras
The Councilor for Tourism, Angélica Such, said today that current occupancy of hotels in the area is standing at 85% for the week long celebration of the Hogueras festival that features the bonfires of San Juan on the night of the 23rd June. Traditionally, Spanish events are celebrated on the night BEFORE the day of the actual event, the day of San Juan being the 24th.
Said Angélica Such, “this data is a positive forecast for occupation, taking into account not only the current economic crisis that is affecting the entire tourism sector, but also the fact that the calendar has not been very benevolent with the night of the bonfire falling on a weekday. ”
The Hogueras de San Juan boasts 4 days of celebration, with huge bonfires and fireworks on the night of the 23rd. The stunning models, often depicting current and political themes, are set alight and the party on the beach goes right through the night. Various places celebrate the event, key locations being Valencia, Alicante, San Juan (Alicante) and smaller events in places like Torrevieja. In addition to that, for the first time since 1965 when the bonfire was cancelled as there are no fire fighters stationed their, on the island of Tabarca, where beer company Mahou are sponsoring boats trips for 350 people to visit this unique event.
