Busy roads for the summer

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is expecting that between the months of July and August there will be 84 million trips, a figure similar to that recorded last year but 4,5 per cent lower than the summer of 2007, on the roads of Spain as summer takes hold.

According to the Director General of the DGT, Pere Navarro, the first major operation of the summer period will be between Friday 3rd July and Sunday 5th July, where it is expected that 3,9 million trips will take place.

From this Sunday, the DGT will activate their special traffic regulation and control of movements protocol during every weekend of the summer.

This weekend, the DGT will mobilize 9300 Guardia Civil Trafico officers, 400 more than last year. There will be 522 checkpoints throughout the road network with 240 vehicles equipped with speeding detectors, including unmarked vehicles.

As well as the usual campaigns to check for speeding vehicles, wearing of seatbelts and use of mobile telephones, the Guardia Civil will also be monitoring animals in vehicles to ensure that they are properly restrained whilst travelling. It is also expected that the checks will be looking for vehicles carrying more passengers than they are legally allowed (e.g. there are enough seat belts for each passenger).
