Anti drink driving campaign starts Monday
The traffic section of the Guardia Civil will launch a specific crack down on drink driving in the Alicante area from Monday 6th July, as part of a national campaign to warn of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The sub-delegated representative of the Government of Alicante, Encarna Llinares, pointed out that this campaign will run until July 19 and quoted that “one third of all fatal accidents result with alcohol as a trigger factor. ”
In the last major campaign for control of alcohol. which ran from 8th to 21st December 2008, the Guardia Civil carried out 14.240 tests in Alicante area, in which 182 drivers were positive.
Llinares also advised that the reform of the Penal Code provides potential prison sentences of 3 to 6 months or a fine and between 6 and 12 months of “community service” for drivers with a blood alcohol level exceeding 1,2 grams per litre or with a rate of alcohol in breath exceeds 0,60 grams.
In addition, you will lose your license for a period of between one year and four years, may have to sit a further test, and will suffer higher insurance premiums.
Since January of this year, the Guardia Civil of Alicante have registered a total of 2.470 positive BAC tests.
As we frequently mention in these articles, it is worth remembering that the amount of alcohol allowed to be consumed before driving is lower that that of the UK. It is always better to never drink anything alcoholic if you are planning to drive and remember that if you do sonsume alcohol, it can remain in your system for longer than you might think.
