11 more hurt in bull run

ELEVEN people were injured, two of them seriously, on Sunday in the Pamplona bull run, two days after a man was gored to death by a bull, organisers said.

The two most badly hurt suffered injuries to the neck, chest and buttocks, a spokesman said, adding that doctors were confident their lives would be saved after surgery.

Three other people were also injured in the buttocks, back and arm and six runners were hospitalised with various other injuries. One of them was unconscious after a blow to his head but he later regained consciousness.

Their nationalities were not immediately known.

On Friday, 27-year-old Daniel Jimeno Romero was gored in the neck, heart and lungs by a bull in front of thousands of tourists.

He was the 15th person to die in the annual run since 1911, but the first to be gored since 1995 when a 22-year-old American was killed. Most injuries come from falls as people run to stay ahead of the bulls racing through the cobbled streets of the northern Spanish town.

Sunday’s run was the sixth in the annual July 6-14 festival, in which about a dozen bulls are released each morning to run from their corral over an 825-metre (900-yard) course to the bullring.

In the afternoon, the same bulls face matadors in the ring while the night is given over to partying. Pamplona authorities have stepped up precautions in recent years to stop people who have drunk too much alcohol taking part.

A 43-year-old Frenchman was also in critical condition on Sunday with injuries to his neck after falling into a pond, organisers said in a statement.

The festival is a symbol of Spanish culture, despite heavy condemnation from animal rights groups, and attracts thousands of tourists to watch the bull runs or take part. — AFP
