Dozens of Spanish firefighters and soldiers were Wednesday battling a wildfire which forced the evacuation of 500 people overnight, emergency services said.

One of the summer’s first major wildfires destroyed some 1,500 hectares of forest and bush in Sierra Cabrera between Turre and Mojacar in southern Almeria province.

Three aircraft and five helicopters were participating in the firefighting effort.
