Words of the President after the terrorist blast during which two civil guards were killed in Calviá
the President of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, attended a press conference in La Moncloa to condemn the terrorist blast and to express his condolences to the families of both civil guards and also to thank the leader of the opposition, Mariano Rajoy, for his support to the Government in the fight against terrorism.
Carlos Saénz de Tejada García and Diego Salva Lezaún, two civil guards, have been murdered by ETA in Calviá (Majorca), today. I would like to speak on behalf of all Spanish citizens and condemn, firmly, though with pain and rage, this new vile deed.
The Government and Spanish society support their families, their friends and colleagues. And I would like to express my affection to them, on behalf of citizens.
Once more, the Civil Guard has suffered the consequences of a terrorist blast against intended to hit us all. Two men have died on duty. Once more, their honour and commitment have forced them to give their lives for freedom and safety in Spain. I would like all the members of the Civil Guard to know that we are suffering with them, and that this is a well-deserved tribute to their services.
This criminal blast, just as the one in Burgos yesterday, takes place in a moment in which the firm actions of the Civil Guard and of the National Police, with the cooperation of the French State Security Forces are cornering the terrorists, eroding their organisation, preventing their actions and identifying their members. More of them are being arrested and they are being arrested sooner, and this is how things will keep going.
Many are currently at prison, serving long sentences and this is what is going to happen to those who have committed the latest blasts. They cannot hide, they cannot escape, they cannot escape Justice, they will be arrested, condemned and sent to prison, where they will spend their time.
All democrats support the security forces and the Rule of Law, and we will fight terrorism together, bringing it to an end, defending our democratic institutions so that freedom and Law may overcome definitively.
I would like to thank the President of the People’s Party – whom I have already informed about the particulars of this awful blast – for his support to the Government against terrorism.
I would also like to tell citizens that the Government has already asked the State Security Forces to watch out, to work harder and make greater efforts and also to protect themselves against these vile murderers.
Thus, I would like to express my solidarity and condolences to the families of Carlos Saénz de Tejada and Diego Salva, for we are indebted to them, and we should remain grateful forever, for their invaluable service to Spain and to freedom, which will always remain in our hearts.
