5 Year old girl killed in the sea near Torrevieja
A 5 year old died today in waters near a marina in Cabo Roig on the Orihuela Costa, apparently as a result of an accident involving a pleasure craft, medical and local sources have reported.
In the same incident, a 35 year old woman has been seriously injured, and has been transferred to the Hospital of Torrevieja.
The accident happened at around 12:30, the circumstances for which are still unknown, when the child and the woman were in the water, and apparently suffered an accident with a boat near the marina.
An investigation is being carried out into the tragedy.
Update 1:2-
the head of the Área Marítima de Torrevieja (Alicante), Oscar Villar, has explained later today that the pleasure craft was anchored in a restricted area off the coast of Cabo Roig, he stated that the location is “clearly marked with prohibition notices.”
The event occurred at around 12:30 today, at the 7,50 metre length boat, which was equipped with two engines, one to port and one to starboard.
Some of the occupants of the boat, including the deceased child and her mother, who also injured in this incident, began a swim around the boat.
Apparently, according to Villar, a person on board the boat wanted to rectify a problem with the boat anchor, and decided to start the starboard engine.
This action caused the death of the child and caused injuries to the 35 year old mother, who has been transferred to Torrevieja Hospital.
After the accident, units of the Guardia Civil, Local Police of Orihuela, the Red Cross and the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) attended the scene.
The Directorate General of Merchant Marine has begun an investigation of what happened, whilst the vessel was transferred to the port of Torre de la Horadada.
Update 2:2-
The child has now been named as Paloma Gómez Marín, a 5 year old girl, who was enjoying a holiday with her family, residents of Murcia, at Torre de la Horadada.
The girl was swimming in the water, with several members of her family, near the harbor when, at about 12:30, someone warned the grandfather of the child, who was driving the boat at the time, that his vessel was moving backwards.
Apparently, in an attempt to rectify the problem, the grandfather, Marcos Marín, who has a company providing road machinery in the capital, decided to start the engine of the boat to change the site according to the directions, as he believed that all occupants were safe.
The propeller hit the girl, one of her brothers and her mother. The girl suffered extensive damage to her lower limbs.
The mother, of 35 years of age and daughter of the boat skipper, and the girl´s brother also suffered injuries as a result, quite serious in the case of the mother, but only minor in the boy.
The father of Paloma was not on the boat at the time, but was told of the tragic events. Several family members were treated for shock and anxiety attacks.
