20090924rgpmarineA Guardia Civil patrol boat was  ordered to leave Gibraltar territorial waters or they would be arrested by the RG Police Marine Section, according to a Royal Gibraltar Police spokesman.> The incident occurred around 11 am on Wednesday morning when Guardia Civil officers boarded a Spanish pleasure craft some 800 metres off Europa Point to carry out a routine document check. The incursion was spotted by the RG Police launch which promptly intervened with back up from the Gibraltar Boat Squadron that was standing by at the RGP’s request.

Local officers also boarded the pleasure craft and ordered the Spanish law enforcers to leave the area at once, advising them that otherwise they were prepared to take ‘executive-action’, which means they would have proceeded to arrest them. The Guardia Civil patrol boat complied with the instructions and immediately abandoned the area.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for The Convent confirmed the incident and said the matter would be taken up with the Spanish Government.  Late yesterday it emerged that Police Commissioner Wink had spoken to his counterpart in Algeciras, informing him that the Guardia Civil patrol boat had been “out of order and out of jurisdiction.”
