The young woman, from Birmingham, met a man on a night out in the seaside resort and returned to his home in the countryside ten miles away, police said.

“The victim was attacked in a country house in Villajoyosa, where she was held for more than three hours and where her attacker forced her several times to have sex,” Spanish police said in a statement.

When she was released, the woman took a train back to Benidorm and reported the crime to police.

A police source said: “She met the man while out having a few drinks and she went back to the house voluntarily.

“But when she was back there the man turned on her and raped her repeatedly.”

A 42-year-old Romanian man was arrested on suspicion of rape on Friday.

Benidorm attracts around 1 million British visitors a year. It boasts around 600 bars including 70 British theme pubs and replicas of Wigan and Blackpool piers, as well as 10 fish and chip shops.
