He is alleged to have charmed at least half a dozen women with his cut-glass English accent, convincing them that he was from a well-known titled family and the heir to a vast fortune.

After starting affairs with the women, the 47-year-old – who was actually a Spaniard – is said to have told them that his rightful inheritance was the subject of legal battle following a family feud.

Using the same story each time he allegedly persuaded the women, with promises of marriage, to hand over sums of up to 700,000 euros (£630,000) to help pay for his lawyers.

He reportedly even convinced one woman to give him a vast sum of cash so he could arrange their wedding at the ancestral home in England. She was later contacted by a girl claiming to be his daughter who said he had died suddenly.

Over the years, several women have lodged complaints to the police after becoming suspicious they had been the victim of an elaborate fraud.

Police finally arrested him on Monday after tracking him to a hotel in Bilbao and have opened an investigation.

Police said they had been investigating three cases, but believed there may be two or three more, in which they say the suspect pursued several relationships simultaneously, followed a similar style and took large sums of money over a number of years.

“He always used the same surname. It was a well-known English name and the story he told each time was very similar.”

Police said he entertained his lovers at the best hotels and restaurants across Spain's northern coast.

“He was very clever and left no trail. It was almost as if he did not exist. Yet he was able to give a very convincing performance and appeared to live in style.”

Police said they would release neither the name the man used nor his true identity in order to protect the privacy of his victims.
