Spain suffers highest youth,female unemployment in EU

Spanish youth and women are bearing the brunt of the current economic crisis, with official data showing they had the worst unemployment rates in the European Union in October.

The figures, published by EU statistics agency Eurostat on Tuesday, show unemployment rates for people aged under 25 stood at 42.9 percent in Spain in October, 9 percentage points higher than the next highest, Latvia.

The number of jobless women in Spain stood at 19.2 percent, also the highest in Europe, according to Eurostat.

The average level of unemployment in the eurozone stood at 9.8 percent in October, while in Spain it was 19.3 percent, second only to Latvia´s 20.9 percent.
