Ornamental Bear Returned in Alicante

Just a day after it was installed on 18 December the smaller of the two bears positioned the in park within the Plaza de Galicia in Alicante was stolen. But fortunately a member of the public, who had read about its disappearance in the local press alerted the Policia Local to its whereabouts on Tuesday.

He came across the bear while out walking, finding it abandoned in an old container. He realised its significance and immediately reported it to the police.

The bear was finally reunited with its creator, the Councillor responsible for Urban care, Andres Llorens, who will spend the next day or two repairing minor damage and restoring it prior to replacing next to its parent in the Plaza de Galicia.

On hearing the news Councillor Llorens described the find as an excellent gift to the people of Alicante in anticipation of the arrival of the Three Kings.

Besides the two bears in the Plaza de Galicia two giraffes were installed in the plaza at the intersection of Gran Via with Calle Agatángelo Soler, a flamenco at La Isleta and a dolphin at the roundabout La Avenida de Denia, opposite the Jesuit school.

Following the theft of the bear the remaining ornamental plants were lashed down with iron hooks to prevent any further disappearance which seems to have proved successful as they are still all in place.

The ornamental animals are an initiative of the Mayor Sonia Castedo in her attempts to ‘pretty up’ the city of Alicante.
