Electricity consumption in Spain slumps in 2009

The consumption of electricity fell sharply in Spain in 2009 as the economic crisis continues to bite, according to figures released on Wednesday.

The Spanish Association of the Electricity Industry (UNESA) said electricity consumption fell by 4.3 percent in 2009.

This has been caused by a drop in business consumption and household efforts to save amid tightening family income, it said.

However, in a year when climate change has been high on the world political agenda, UNESA had good news for Spain.

The production of renewable energy surged 15.3 percent, thanks to a strong increase in wind turbines.

Hydroelectric generation also witnessed an 8.45-percent rise, while production based on carbon and gas dropped by 23.7 percent and 9.1 percent respectively. As a result, carbon emissions caused by power generation were cut down by 17 percent.
