Spanish public water agency Acuamed has awarded a €5.8 million contract to Iberdrola for the supply of renewable energy to power all its installations in 2010.
The entire 40MW supply will come from renewable sources, meaning that all Acuamed’s desalination plants – along with its wastewater reuse and denitrification plants – will be powered by wind and solar energy.
The contract will include supply to Acuamed’s largest SWRO facility at Torrevieja, although permanent infrastructure to connect the plant to the grid has not yet been installed.
The contract has in-built flexibility which will allow the production of desalinated water or regenerated wastewater to be organised so as to take advantage of periods of low demand and price, as well as special circumstances affecting the transport and distribution network.
The move is designed to contribute to the Spanish government’s recently-declared objective of achieving a 20% cut in energy consumption in all areas of central government activity by 2016.
