British woman killed in Pyrenees avalanche

Vanessa Addison killed in SpainVanessa Addison, 34, and her Spanish climbing companion, a man of 53, were killed instantly when they were engulfed by fast sliding snow in the Val de Boi valley, in the province of Lérida, on Friday morning.

They were on an organised climb with a group from the Spanish Mountain Sports Federation.

Several of the other climbers were trapped until a fire service mountain rescue team managed to reach them.

A squad of firemen on a mountain exercise nearby were caught in the same avalanche. One of them received injuries later described as “not serious”.

Authorities said the avalanche was believed to have been started by a rise in temperatures.

Miss Addison had recently been described by one of her sponsors, the climbing equipment manufacturers Trangoworld, as “one of the best female climbers in Spain”.

She had moved from Britain to Benasque, a small town in the province of Huesca further west along the Pyrenees, eight years ago in order to pursue her passion for climbing.

Her climbing companion lived in Amposta, near Tarragona, south of Barcelona.
