Discover the charms of Elx
Take a stroll around the streets of Elx and you will discover an urban layout that provides faithful testimony to the splendour of this city. A past that harmonises perfectly with the elements of a forward-looking and dynamic city, with the most beautiful natural landscapes and, of course, with its nine kilometres of fine sandy beach, exotic dunescapes and semi-urban beaches.
Elx has many treasures including the biggest Palm Grove in Europe, a natural wonder declared World Heritage by UNESCO; the Elx Mystery Plays, a mediaeval sung drama which has been declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity; and the Festival of Oral Traditions
Festival de la Oralitat 2010
From 22nd February to 14th March, Elx will be home to the Festival of Oral Traditions 2010, an event that pays tributes to cultural heritage, the oral memory of history and culture. This festival will be held at the Miguel Hernández University as well as buildings such as La Llotja fish market and the Grand Theatre, paying tribute to great writers such as Mario Benedetti and María Zambrano.
During the event, there will be seminars, storytelling, roundtable discussions, exhibitions and concerts featuring the participation not only of the regions of Valencia, Madrid and the Basque Country, but also many international guests such as Colombia, Cuba, Peru and Venezuela. Elx will be the main venue, but not the only one, since Sant Joan d'Alacant, Aspe, Hondón de las Nieves, Petrer, Alicante, Valencia and Castellón will also provide the stages for the Festival of Oral Traditions 2010.
