New Spanish abortion law clears Senate

Spain´s Senate has approve the country´s new abortion bill, which allows the procedure without restrictions up to 14 weeks.

The approval means the law will take effect later this year.

The bill, which brings this traditionally Roman Catholic country in line with its more secular neighbors in northern Europe, cleared the house Wednesday after a majority of senators rejected three proposals by conservative parties to have it thrown out.

The chamber also rejected 88 amendments.

The bill was approved by the lower house in December.

The law wipes away the threat of imprisonment and declares abortion to be a woman's right.

Under the previous law, dating back to 1985, women could in theory go to jail for getting an abortion outside certain strict limits.
