Hotel fires results in 2 deaths as guests jump to safety

Two people died after jumping out of the windows of the Hotel Normandía in the tiny Pyrenean state of Andorra this morning after a fire broke out there in the early hours.

According to local media reports, the fire started in the hotel´s reception and quickly spread to other parts of the hotel in the capital, Andorra la Vella.

Several people jumped out of windows to escape the flames, with fatal consquences for a 48-year-old Spaniard and a 28-year-old Brazilian.

Altogether, seventeen people were injured, three of them seriously. Most of the injured have been treated for smoke inhalation and since released from hospital, but one person is in a very serious condition in the Hospital General de Cataluña, in Barcelona, with multiple contusions and brain and liver haemorrages.

Another person has been taken to the burns unit at Barcelona´s Val d´Hebron hospital with third degree burns to 30% of his body. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
