Man arrested for shooting in Spain
A MAN has been arrested over the gangland-style shooting of a wanted fugitive in Spain.
Spanish police arrested a 27-year-old Irish man in the resort of Coin in connection with the murder of 26-year-old Dan Smith.
The man is currently being questioned.
The arrest comes as witnesses revealed how Smith, of Coxes Farm Road, Billericay, got into a row with another customer at the Lounge Bar in Mijas near Malaga, just hours before he was gunned down in a hail of bullets.
One regular at the bar said: “It started with a row in the bar because the Irish bloke was annoying some of the other drinkers, especially the women.
“Dan stood up and said to him, ‘why don’t you get out of here – nobody wants you here’.
“The Irish bloke said to him, ‘you wait there, I will be back in a minute’. Then a few minutes later, all hell broke loose.”
It is understood the man was arrested on suspicion of Smith’s murder on Monday evening.
Smith had been on the run from Essex Police for nearly three years.
He was wanted for the attempted murder of businessman Douglas Turner in July 2007.
Smith is suspected of shooting Turner on the doorstep of his home in Kings Head Road, Stock, following a disagreement with his victim’s son.
Smith had been living on the Costa Del Sol and working as a builder.
He was shot and killed on Saturday night.
