Torrential rain in Denia
Torrential rain in Denia this morning has forced the authorities to close schools in the area. Over the past few hours, 65 litres of rain per square metre has fallen in Denia, causing widespread flooding around the town. 25 litres of rain per square metre fell in just one hour, between 6.30am and 7.30am.
Huge quantities of rain water have accumulated around the Camí de Llabador, the Avenida de Miguel Hernández and the Plaza de Jaume I, where the majority of the town’s schools are concentrated. Police have confirmed that there have been no major incidents or injuries as a result of the rain and that the town is functioning “normally”.
No major roads either into or out of the town have been closed as yet, although the N-332 is flooded at the entrance to the town. However the heavy rain has made it impossible to use either the “Viejo Camino de Denia” (Camí Vell de Dénia) around the area of ‘Les Fonts’.
Eleven provinces in the north and east of the country remain on yellow alert because of the risk of heavy rain and flooding. These include Murcia, Alicante, Almería as well as provinces in the Communities of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country. Mallorca and Menorca are also on yellow alert because of the threat of storms and torrential rain.
