DRUNK DRIVERS TO LOSE VEHICLES

The chief judge of Almería, Luis Miguel Column, said that when the new Penal Code is introduced in the Province on 23 December anyone found drunk behind the wheel of a vehicle should lose his car forever.

After studying recent data released on such crimes he said that the measure was necessary if driving whilst under the influence of alcohol was to be discouraged.

“We need to stiffen the Penal Code with particular regard to crimes of road safety so I am pleased to see that the new measures being introduced will allow my judges to take away forever the vehicle of anyone who is found guilty. “

Amongst some of the other data released last week on crime in Spain by the Attorney General´s Office it would seem that crimes that infringe on property have also increased significantly as well as those concerning traffic safety but of particular concern he said were to upturn in figures released in relation to gender violence.

Column said that “the truth is that the number of complaints does not decrease, but whilst they are rising, what has gone down is the number of convictions.  With increasing frequency the decision is taken by the victim to use the right not to testify against his or her partner which takes us to a percentage of acquittals which are close to fifty percent.
