TORREVIEJA EXTENDS MARRIAGE GRANT
The city of Torrevieja has announced that they will continue the financial aid to newly married couples that began 14 years ago, offering 3,000 euro to the newlyweds.
However, the grant will now only be offered to the under 35 year old age group and one of the couple must have been registered as a Torrevieja resident for at least five year.
Applications and related documentation must be presented at the General Register of the City Council within the deadline, which opens on 13 February and runs until May 12.
LIGHTS OUT ON WEDNESDAY
The Green Party are supporting an electrical blackout that is set to take place across Spain on the evening of Wednesday 15 February at 10pm, in protest against the “disastrous” energy policy implemented by the Spanish government.
The society are calling for groups and individuals to join them by switching off all electrical items for 5 minutes to raise awareness of the need for a more sustainable energy policy.
A Facebook group has also been set up to support the campaign against abusive electricity tariffs.
ALICANTE AIRPORT PASSENGER FIGURES DOWN
A total of 424,309 passengers used the airport facilities at Alicante El Altet during the month of January, representing a decrease of 11.9% over the same period last year.
Domestic traffic, which totalled 105,380 passengers, suffered the biggest drop, down 21.8%, largely attributed to industrial action and closure of a Spanish.
Passengers from the UK showed the least drop, down just 3.7%, with a decrease of 175,939 passengers. Passengers from Holland were up 7.7%, German travellers were down 25.1% and passengers from Belgium were up by 2.7%.
In terms of airlines, following their mass withdrawal, Ryanair carried 115,019 passengers, a drop of 26.1%, Easjet carried 58,947, an increase of 0.9%, Monarch dropped by 1.5% to 34,602 passengers whereas Transavia carried a total of 22,341, marking a staggering increase of 33.6% and Norweguian grew by 19.3% to 21,847 passengers in January.
MAN ARRESTED FOR VILLAJOYOSA STABBING
A man has been arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the stabbing that left a 24 year old Romanian man seriously injured following a fight in a club in Villajoyosa.
The incident is being investigated by the Guardia Civil and further arrests have not been ruled out.
NEW EXPRESS CARGO LINK TO THE CANARIES
A new express ferry service started this week connecting the cargo port of the city of Alicante with the Canary Islands.
The cargo ship Spica will leave Alicante every Saturday and arrive in Algeciras on Sunday, Tenerife on Tuesday, Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on Wednesday and the following Saturday at Arrecife
