TORREVIEJA CONTRACTS TO BE RETENDERED DUE TO ERRORS

The city council of Torrevieja is being forced to offer three contracts to tender for work, which had already been granted, due to procedural errors in their administration procedures.

One of the contracts is for the tourist train that runs through the city, on which a pensioner tragically died last year whilst the service was out of contract. Although unrelated, this will now be the fourth time that this contract has been offered and implemented, and four times that the municipal funds have had to pay for the presentation of the contract procedure. The maintenance contract for lifts had to be renegotiated due to a reduction in the budget for the service down to 68,000 euro and the 146,000 euro contract for disinfection and pest control, due to a clerical error in the transcript.

In addition to these errors, the contract to provide catering services at the café within the municipal theatre will go un-served, and the city has awarded itself the 42,000 euro contract to renew traffic signs.

DRUNK DRIVER IN CITY CRASH

The local police have detained a driver, who tested positive for alcohol, following a traffic incident on avenida Teodomiro in Orihuela.

The vehicle was spotted driving at speeds in excess of 90 kilometres per hour and subsequently collided with a vehicle stopped at the junction of the road with calle La Huerta and then hitting numerous vehicles having turned into that road before the driver tried to escape on foot.

Upon being captured, the driver also had an out of date license and a breath reading of 0.84 before being arrested and taken to the police headquarters.

ORIHUELA COSTA CELEBRATES THE DAY OF THE TREE

The official annual day of the tree will be marked on the Orihuela Costa this year, with the councillor for the coast and the councillor for the environment taking part in a tree planting ceremony at Blue Lagoon.

Starting at around 10:45 on Thursday morning, the councillors will do their bit to help improve the environmental surrounds with an aim to make the scenery of the Orihuela Costa more aesthetically pleasing, whilst helping to improve and reduce the environmental impact of development.

BENIDORM HOTEL FIRE FORCES KITCHEN EVACUATION

A fire in a chimney flue forced the evacuation of the kitchens at the Río Park hotel in Benidorm for over an hour on Tuesday, but guests and visitors were allowed to stay on the premises.

Some of the workers in the kitchen were reported to have suffered minor burns in the incident at the hotel located on avenida Murcia at the corner with calle Kennedy, although only one was taken to hospital for treatment.

CARNIVAL CONTINUES IN HABANERAS

The official Torrevieja carnival parade may have come to an end, but the party will continue at the Habaneras shopping centre this weekend, with a series of activities and an appearance from the Murcia based group "Golpe y Porrazo".

There will be a parade in the Torrevieja shopping centre on Friday, along with video shows and on Saturday they fun will be bolstered by giant bubbles and clowns and the musical extravaganza right through the day.
