GRAFFITI DENOUNCED ON MEDIEVAL WALL
The city of Orihuela is attempting to identify vandals who have painted graffiti on a site of cultural interest, the remains of a medieval wall surrounding the city. Located towards San Miguel, the wall is thought to date back to between the twelfth and fourteenth century and is all that is believed to be left of the castle of Orihuela.
A report has been commissioned by the City Council, who has put the matter to the attention of the Ministry of Culture to try to redress the damage as soon as possible.
DOG FOUND HANGING FROM TREE
A resident of Granja de Rocamora made a gruesome discovery whilst out walking her dogs along a country lane towards the town of Cox. The lady had spotted the corpse of a dog left hanging from a fig tree, with a bag over its jaw so as to render its mouth useless in any kind of defence.
The woman returned home in shock and alerted her husband, who then went to photograph the scene for evidence and report the matter to the authorities. Although it will be difficult to identify the perpetrator of the crime of abuse, locals are assisting the police to try to bring the callous killer to justice.

GREENS ASK MAYOR TO CUT PAY
The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja have tabled a notion that asks the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón of the Partido Popular, to make a gesture of solidarity towards those struggling through the financial crisis, by reducing his own salary.
They have also pointed out that the role of Mayor comes with many privileges, such as a large expenses account, banquets, parties, trips away and the like, so they have asked that the current salary of 68,600 euro be reduced to just 50,000 euro, whilst still allowing him to maintain the benefits of the role. The saving would be 18,600 euro, which is still more than many Spanish families receive in a year, as most struggle by on 16,000 euro annual income.
SALT PRODUCTION INCREASES
The salt lakes of Torrevieja are on target to have produced 750,000 tons of salt by the end of the production year in July, marking an increase of 10% over last year.
The increase is partly down to better weather conditions this year, but the milder winter across Europe has meant that sales have dropped, resulting in an excess of salt remaining at the sites. The facility will close for a month as usual in July, to enable routine maintenance to be carried out before the start of the next production year in August.
HEALTH WORKERS LEARN TO SIGN
Torrevieja Hospital hosted a course for health professionals last week, to offer students the basic vocabulary of sign language in order to communicate with deaf people in a natural and fluid manner.
The course covered the most important sociological aspects affecting deaf people, such as organizations that work with their community, as well as the use of technology, in addition to training the attendees in the basics of the language.

Although job seekers are welcome to apply direct, you can now hand your CV in at the town hall where a database has already been created that allows filtering of applicants to suit the needs of the vacant roles.
WINE CELEBRATES 80 YEAR BIRTHDAY
The tourism training centre of Torrevieja will be marking the 80th birthday of the Denomination of Origin for wines from Alicante, by holding a special awareness event on Monday 14th May.
In addition to that event aimed at professionals in the hospitality industry, members of the public will be invited to sample many different wines from the region as part of the “Open on Saturday” campaign which will happen on Saturday 19th May, when streets will once again be closed off and entertainment, music, displays and now wine, will all be on offer to weekend visitors to the city.
