The highly paid Eduardo Dolón

GREENS ASK MAYOR TO CUT PAY

The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja have tabled a notion that asks the mayor of the city, Eduardo Dolón of the Partido Popular, to make a gesture of solidarity towards those struggling through the financial crisis, by reducing his own salary.

They have also pointed out that the role of Mayor comes with many privileges, such as a large expenses account, banquets, parties, trips away and the like, so they have asked that the current salary of 68,600 euro be reduced to just 50,000 euro, whilst still allowing him to maintain the benefits of the role. The saving would be 18,600 euro, which is still more than many Spanish families receive in a year, as most struggle by on 16,000 euro annual income.

SALT PRODUCTION INCREASES

The salt lakes of Torrevieja are on target to have produced 750,000 tons of salt by the end of the production year in July, marking an increase of 10% over last year.

The increase is partly down to better weather conditions this year, but the milder winter across Europe has meant that sales have dropped, resulting in an excess of salt remaining at the sites. The facility will close for a month as usual in July, to enable routine maintenance to be carried out before the start of the next production year in August.
