On June 16 next 2012 at Las Colinas Golf and Country Club the golf event of the summer will take place. Building on the success of last years' tournament, Samaritans in Spain have plans for an even bigger and better event this year. Excitement is building among the golfing fraternity at the possibility of once again endeavouring to hit a hole in one and wining a brand new car. Many of the participants of last year's event have already signed up and reserved their place.

The day will commence with 80 golfers making a shotgun start at 9.15 a.m. in teams of four individuals. The cost of entry is Euro 65 per player inclusive of a donation to SiS also included in the price is use of a buggy and complementary light refreshments. Those interested in participating should contact Denise & John on 679 871 156 as soon as possible.
While most of the preparations are well under way for this major event Samaritans are still inviting sponsors to contribute for individual holes and donations of prizes.

Following the day of golf will be a Gala Evening of Dance and Entertainment at a cost of Euro 40 per person including a donation to the charity. Commencing with a cava reception, followed by a four course meal with wine, water and coffee. Entertainment will continue throughout the evening with the dulcet tones of the wonderful Mr Paul Allen in his inimitable brat pack style tribute. A raffle of extensive prizes donated by local businesses will also take place. All proceeds from the raffle will go to Samaritans in Spain.

Guests may avail of overnight accommodation at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club in their apartment complex at a special price of Euro 30 per person, based on 4 persons sharing an apartment, including breakfast.

Samaritans in Spain operate a free emotional support helpline from 8 – Midnight every evening of the year: Phone 902 88 35 35.
The charity is currently recruiting for volunteers to increase their team. People who may be interested to find out more information about becoming a Samaritan volunteer or becoming a friend of Samaritans should e-mail their details to joinus@costablancasamaritans.com
A wonderful day to play golf, and the course, as always was in good condition, thanks to all the management and staff.

Our 2011 Gold class had a play off, and the eventual winner was Bob Adair, and runner up Steve Cottle, well done to both, a credit to our society.

The results of the day are as follows:-
Nearest the pin on the 2nd went to Steve Cottle: on the 14th went to Dave Gill: and on the 17th went to Chris Butler:
Silver Class runner up was Dave Kirk with 31 points, Silver Class winner went to Paul Abbott with 32 points. Gold Class runner up with 32 points was Dave Gill, and the Gold Class winner was Bill Denne with 33 points, however I would point out that this was after much adjudication.
The best guest prize went to Charlie McGonagle with 27 points.

In our society there is a gentleman by the name of Stewart Coleman, who is playing in the World One arm championships at St Andrews in Scotland, on the 29th of June celebrating 75 years of the society, of which out of the 72 players Stewart is one.
Anyone interested in helping Stewart in his quest, please go firstly to their website SOAG Society of one arm golfers, initially set up for ex servicemen, Stewart is looking for support from us all in his quest to become One arm champion.

The Limebar at Los Altos and the Courtyard at Los Balcones, have shown great interest in running a Race night etc to help Stewart, any inputs and financial help would be greatly appreciated by Stewart and the limebar golf society. Finally anyone interested in joining our society please give George a call on 693-789082.
Our sincere thanks go to Sue and Pete at the Limebar for the wonderful food and all the help they give to our friendly society.

Another twist on a yellow ball game for the Society playing for the first time at Peraleja. The course was busy and we had a late 1st tee of 10.40am which unfortunately made it a bit slow.

For many of the Society it was a first look at Peraleja and although the course is not in the best condition, the greens were good and fast. We played as 3 balls in this competition and the handicaps were fairly spread in each team. Starting from the 1st and 10th tees simultaneously ensured that we were finishing close and no one was sat waiting long for the last teams to arrive in the clubhouse.

There were some excellent scores in today by one or two individuals which included 6 of their holes scoring at double points. The winning team amassed a total of 128 points with one member (Richard Phillips) scoring 52 of those points together with Paul Matthews and Jenny O´Neill. In second place the team of Alex McLennan, (top individual on the day with 56 points) Joan Williams and George Stein finished with 123 points and only got there on count back amazingly scoring the same front and back nines as the 3rd place team.

It was a shame that the prizes were only for 1st and 2nd place as it was my team in 3rd place.

Our usual nearest the pin prizes on the day were won by Alex McLennan on holes 3 and 7 and by myself (Bob Gallard) on holes 12 and 15.

The societies next game is on Monday 6th February at Roda. Pay day is Saturday 4th at Roda between 11am and 12 noon.

Ps. Just a quick get well message to our Captain Roy Herbert who at this point in time, still in hospital but we are told he is on the mend, Get well soon Roy.

Report by Bob Gallard

However, it did not start well with many of our members losing the plot as far as directions to the golf course were concerned, but thanks to Jose, at Alenda, we were able to keep near enough to our booked tee times.

Course in great condition, greens superb but what a place to have the pin on the 18th, very well placed to test us all.

It was also the first golf day for members to nominate their card for our Super League to be finalised in December, 5 cards were nominated and after the game we had El Presidente on a count back with 33 points leading the pack. While talking about count backs it was just as well we had 3 Categories for the prizes as we could still be at the course checking scores which were very close because we had 12 members coming in with a score over 30 points with the winner on 37

Results for the day.

Category 1. 1st. Maurice Sweeney 37 points. 2nd. Brian Mulligan 33 points on c/b. 3rd. Ronnie Gibson.

Category 2. 1st. Peter Kerr 33 points. 2nd. Brian Coombes 32 points on c/b. 3rd. Roger Bird.

Category 3. 1st. Terry Sangwine 34 points on c/b. 2nd. Roger Twigg. 3rd. David Winder 33 points.

Our nearest the pin winners Hole 3. Reg Palmer, Hole 5. Alan Darby, Hole 13. Maurice Sweeney, Hole 16. Alan Darby

Longest Drive on Hole 17. Mick Gossage. I should also say that Micks wife Lin ran a half marathon at Santa Pola at the weekend in aid of Help the Heroes Charity and was sponsored by TORREGOLF.EU but .....yes, she ran with perhaps she thought, a strained ankle, but was later diagnosed with a broken leg. Have you ever heard of someone running 12 1/2 miles (not sure whats that in kilometre's) with a broken leg. Well don Lin.

Back to the golf. Best front 9. Peter Kerr 19 points. Best back 9. Maurice Sweeney 23 points.

Lastly our football scratch card with a 20 Euro prize was won by Roger Bird

Our next game is back to our home course El Plantio on Valentines Day, 14th.February followed by Golf Altorreal on Monday 5th.March. So if you want to play some of the best courses here on the Costas with the best prices then email davidwinder.torregolf@gmail.com or give him a call on (0034) 626774157.

Please also follow the path of CD Montesinos in their quest for promotion, currently top of the league, on http://www.cdmontesinos.com/

On January 27th Forum Golf Society played an individual stableford competition at Marina Golf in Mojacar, and the brief taste of English weather in the form of a passing shower around midday obviously suited many of the 55 strong field, as the day´s scoring was extremely high.

24 players returned scores of 30 points or better, but none could match Gus Penno´s total of 41 which saw him record an excellent victory on his first Forum outing. Countback was needed to decide the next four places after Keith Ryder (second), Dave Sharp (third), Peter Harrington (fourth) & Louise Douglas (fifth) all scored 39 points, with Roy Barker (38 points) sixth & Brian Gyer (37 points) seventh.

The four nearest the pin prizes went to Robin Hawkins, Richard Swaine, Frank Varey & Kevin Bircher, whilst Adrian Lawrence joined the “Big hitters” club to claim the longest drive on the tricky seventh hole.

Forum´s upcoming events are

February 7th Almeria League Round Six at Playa Macenas February 10th Team Coloured Ball at Marina February 22nd Almeria League Round Seven at Alboran

A warm welcome to all our members and guests and our first competition of the new season and the welcome is definitely warmer in comparison to the weather at the moment. Again we had another fantastic turn out with 36 players taking on our new home course of Roda. Most of the players found the course a real challenge with only one golfer managing to break 36 points.

The results were as follows, Jose Julian Lopez with 41 points.

Second, Denis McCormack 36points, third with 36 a new prize winner George Drew his extra shot obviously was a major encouragement. The gross was won by Tommy Halpin with 31 points. Our visitors section was won by Mike Banfiled with 36 points well done Mike. Nearest the pins on the par five were as follows, Dave Mullett, hole 1 with an eagle. Dave commented he had more points on the first hole than the remainder of the first nine, I am sure he was only joking. Hole 5 Carsten Pedersen, hole, 10 Tommy Halpin and the 18th Mike Banfiled.

Well done to all and we look forward to presenting you with your prizes on the 25th of February in the Rocajuna.

We would like to thank Roda and the staff especially Inma, Remy and Esteban for their excellent welcome and assistance in organising the returning of scores for handicap adjustments to the federation and for the use of their fine facilities. On the day we were very happy to have sponsorship from Camillus for the nearest the pin prizes, thank you for support.

Our next tournament is at Font de Llop on the 18th of February with green fee, buggy and competition for €35 per player, plus those of you with federated handicaps will have their cards returned for revision.

It is also the same price for visitors and all are welcome. Also on the 25th of February we have a tournament in Alicante Golf. For the Saint Patricks weekend we have teamed up with a sponsor from Madrid and we will be able to play a singles on the 17th and a four ball on the 18th in El Valle and Mar Menor. There will be three categories first and second, gross, longest drives and nearest the pins, plus a picnic on the 10th hole. The winners from each category qualify for a national final. Membership of our club is €25. For our members we have negotiated with Roda Golf an excellent offer. For further details on membership and upcoming tournaments contact 662422605 evenings' best or e-mail johnobrienalicante@gmail.com.

Today we played our monthly competition from the white professional tees, playing from these tees gives our players the opportunity to match themselves against the professional players in terms of distance and difficulty.

Playing from the back tees is hard enough but we also had a strong wind today that made the course play even longer on some holes, but even so some good scores, as always, were returned.

Our winner today was once again our youngest member, Charlie little. Charlie is becoming a very good player and continues to reduce his handicap. Charlie returned a very good score of 37 points.

In second place, helped by some very good putting, was my playing partner Derek Braid. Derek returned another very good score of 36 points.

Third place was taken by Paul Guest only just behind the leaders with 35 points.
Our nearest the pin winners today were Glynn ( its a driver ) Chappell on the 3rd hole, Martin Mykael on the 6th and 16th holes and Derek Braid on the 13th hole.

Our two's competition was finally won today after a 4 week rollover and what a way to win it! Charlie Little completed a great day with an eagle two on the 17th hole and then had this hole pulled from the hat to take the jackpot. Well done Charlie I hope you bought your dad a drink.

Finally two best dressed golfer prizes were awarded today to, Glynn Chappell for his efforts at Villa Marrtin last Saturday and to John Stabler for todays score. Hard luck chaps hope the wine is better than the golf was.
