A student from Spain’s University of Alcala died Monday when he fell from the third floor of a beach hotel at this Mexican resort city on the Caribbean.

Diego Boto Galindo, 20, came to Cancun with a group of 39 Spanish students, the Quintana Roo state Attorney General’s Office said in a communique.

Authorities received notice at 6:30 a.m. of a dead body on the premises of the Hotel Be Live.

Police are investigating under what circumstances the young Spaniard fell from the third floor. His fellow students told officers that he said goodnight to them on Sunday upon returning from a discotheque, and after that they knew no more of him.

Boto Galindo’s body was found by workers during the first shift Monday.

Gary Moore the legendary Belfast-born guitarist has died in his sleep last night, while on holiday in Spain.

One of the greatest players of his generation, Gary Moore began his professional career in his teens. He was still only sixteen years of age when he moved from Belfast to Dublin in 1969, to join Skid Row – originally a four-piece that featured Brush Shiels on bass, Nollaig Bridgeman on drums and Philip Lynott as lead vocalist, as well as Gary on lead guitar.

Soon afterwards, Philip Lynott was sidelined, with Brush and Gary sharing vocals, turning Skid Row into a power-trio of the kind that was in vogue at the time, following on the success of Rory Gallagher’s Taste and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Skid Row were signed to CBS Records and released two albums, Skid in 1970 and 34 Hours in 1971.

Adept at blues, hard rock and jazz, Moore was also a superb, lyrical, melodic guitar player and featured on a number of other Irish albums in cameo roles, including records by Dr.Strangely Strange among others. He was drafted into Thin Lizzy by Philip Lynott to replace the departing Eric Bell, before the formation of the definitive 4-piece Lizzy line-up, with Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on twin lead guitars. However, on the Nightlife album (1974), he played the extraordinary solo on ‘Still In Love With You’, which became one of Thin Lizzy’s most enduring tracks and a perennial live favourite. Gary returned to the Lizzy line-up briefly again, when Brian Robertson was ruled out of a US tour in 1977. Moore also featured on the Lizzy album Black Rose, released in 1979.

“He was a genius player,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. “Even as a teenager, he had something special about him and throughout his career he worked really hard at improving his technique. His contribution to the Irish rock canon was immense, both in his own solo work, his days with Skid Row, the great records he recorded with Philip Lynott and with Thin Lizzy and in various other cameos. My heart goes out to all of his close friends and family. It is a huge loss.”

While his relationship with Lizzy lead singer and songwriter Philip Lynott was hugely competitive, and there were often disagreements between them, they remained musical cohorts, and joined forces for the hit single ‘Parisienne Walkways’ (1979) on which Philip sang and the later single, ‘Out In The Fields’ (1985), which reached No.5 in the UK charts.

While he featured along the way as part of Jon Hiseman in Colosseum II, for most of his career Gary Moore led his own band, shifting between hard rock, metal, jazz-influenced fusion music and the blues. The first Gary Moore Band LP, Grinding Stone, was released in 1973. In recent years he had returned to his roots, first with the release of Still Got The Blues in 1991 and later with Back To The Blues, in 2001. In all, he released 20 studio albums, as well as six live collections, including the Live At Montreaux DVD.

Spanish police initially said they were questioning his brother-in-law after an alleged fight at a hotel, but later said his death was not being treated as criminal.

Stephen Storey, 47, had gone to the Catalan capital with his brother-in-law, David Brennan, but died on the first night of their long weekend break.

Father-of-two Mr Brennan, 49, lives just a few hundred yards away from his sister and brother-in-law in Neath.

The family said the football fanatics flew to Barcelona for a stag weekend and to watch the city’s superstars in a match tonight.

Mr Brennan’s father, also David, 69, said: “It is just unbelievable to realise that one of the boys is dead after going to Spain for a fun weekend.

“They ran a local football team together and were really good friends and drinking buddies.

“David is a big Chelsea fan while Steve supported Liverpool. They always had a lot of banter about soccer.

“The lads flew out and were looking forward to a great weekend at the stag do of their friend, who is from Glasgow.

“We don’t know exactly what happened – we are only getting little bits of information. But we’ve heard something went on outside the hotel and in a room. But my understanding is that David will be released in a couple of days.”

Mr Brennan, a father of three, lives with wife Alison in a smart semi-detached house just a few hundred yards from Mr Storey’s home, which he shared with partner, Clare Brennan, 42, who is Mr Brennan’s sister.

The couple have been together for 16 years and have two children, Amelia, nine, and Sean, 11.

Mr Storey also has two children from a previous relationship, daughter, Kadie, 25, and son Ben, 20.

The men were planning on watching Barcelona versus Athletico Madrid at the Nou Camp.

Mr Storey took time off from his job as a print manager at Viscose Closures in Swansea and Mr Brennan from his job as a manager at building supplies company Taylor Maxwell in Cardiff.

A colleague said: “Stephen was a lovely guy, hard working and a big sports fan.

“He loved his football and was a golfer.

“He was going to Barcelona to go to the Nou Camp and watch a game.

“Steve was in work on Wednesday and he was really looking forward to going away.

“He was a hard-working guy and had been with the company for three or four years.

“Steve was a typical, ordinary family man and he was well liked by everyone who worked here.

“This is a great shock to us all. It seems so strange that someone you work with every day you will never see again.

“The police came into the factory and simply told us Steve had died in Spain, they didn’t tell us any more details.”

Mr Storey’s family live in Liverpool.

Police were called to the Hotel Silken, just off the Catalan capital’s famous Ramblas, just after 2am on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman in Spain said they had questioned a 49-year-old man after a fight.

However, they later said they were not treating the cause of death as criminal.

Former chip shop owner Stephen Shaw, 48, had a heart attack and died days after their Spanish holiday in March.

Cops are now probing claims by widow Carol, 52, that some of his pals have also died.

She said: “We don´t know what´s happened other than several came back and have passed away. We are trying to get over it a little bit and then get smacked in the nose again.”

She told local councillor Grace Brown after hearing of other deaths among the pals from Barnsley, South Yorks – although no specific names were mentioned.

Coun Brown passed the information to the local coroner.

She said: “A happy, fit husband was going on holiday one minute and then he´s died, then his friends die one by one.

“It beggars belief. Mrs Shaw was very upset when she told me about it. I heard it could be as many as six. It seems to me that it´s much more than a coincidence and that an investigation is necessary.

“The deaths could have been missed because the coroner would not have known the men had been on holiday together.”

Barnsley Coroner´s Office has asked police to investigate the claims on their behalf.

A spokesman said: “I don´t know the names of all of those involved. We hope to hear from the police by the end of next week regarding their investigation.

“All of the evidence will then be passed on to the coroner who will make a decision on how to act from there. It is highly unusual.”

Chief Insp Shaun Morley, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We were made aware of this matter in the last few days.

“Since then officers have carried out a number of preliminary inquiries.”

Two of the victims were travelling in a four-wheel drive vehicle which was swept away by floods near Aguilar de la Frontera overnight. The bodies of the man and woman were found Tuesday morning.

The third person, a man, was killed by a wall which collapsed because of the rains in Bujalance.

Flooding also hampered rail traffic and blocked roads. Rescuers attended to several motorists who had got stuck inside their vehicles.

A boat carrying at least 37 refugees, amongst them five dead, including two babies, was rescued this afternoon off the coast of Motril (Granada) by the Martitime Rescue Services and the Guardia Civil.

The boat was spotted around 4pm about 43 nautical miles to the south of Motril by a Maritime Rescue aircraft doing a routine patrol of the area.

When the rescue services arrived they found the boat practically underwater and it quickly capsized when one of the occupants stood up in the excitement of being rescued.

This resulted in the drowning of the two babies, along with three adults – two men and a woman – who got trapped beneath the boat and were unable to swim out from under it.

A member of the rescue team managed to save the life of a baby barely a year old who fell into the water and an adult who almost drowned.

Two of the refugees, a man and his baby, who was in severe shock, were transferred by helicopter to a hospital in Almería. The remaining survivors were taken to the port of Motril where they are being tended to by volunteers from the Red Cross. Four of them, including a baby about a year old, were then taken to hospital.

All of the refugees were from the Sub-Sahara, except one who was from the Maghreb.

Benidorm star Geoffrey Hutchings, a familiar face from stage, TV and film for four decades, has died, aged 71.

The Rada-trained star saw his career stretch from Shakespearean theatre to a string of popular dramas, and he was most recently seen in ITV1?s Benidorm.

Hutchings’s celebrated TV dramas have also included the acclaimed saga Our Friends In The North, as well as Heart Of Darkness and Made In Britain.

But his work took him through a diverse range of roles, including daytime TV dramas, popular series such as Bad Girls and last year he had a brief spell in EastEnders.

The actor, who lived in central London, died suddenly in hospital at around 8am yesterday (Thursday).

His agent Roger Charteris said: “He is thought to have died from a sudden viral infection. He was fine at lunchtime on Wednesday but he had died by Thursday morning.”

Hutchings’s latest series, the sitcom Grandma’s House written by comic Simon Amstell, is due to be screened by BBC2 this summer.

And he was due to begin filming the next series of Benidorm shortly.

The Dorchester-born actor studied French and PE at Birmingham University, later attending Rada and becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1968.

His stagecraft won him an Olivier Award for best comedy performance in 1982 for his role in Poppy.

Sisters Mildred Bowman and Alice Wardle lay trapped for nearly five days under fold down beds in their Benidorm apartment before dying of suffocation four years ago.

Both women’s families were offered out of court settlements by tour operator My Travel – now Thomas Cook.

And wile Alice’s family accepted, Mildred’s refused, choosing to fight on.

Earlier this year an inquest finally took place into their deaths – and Gateshead Coroner Terence Carney ruled their horrific end “could and should have been avoided”.

Mildred’s children Paul, John and Carol, finally hoped this would give them the clout to take legal action against Thomas Cook – who they believe should have done more to ensure the beds were safe.

But now they have been told by he company they are too late as applications for civil proceedings must be made within three years of the death.

“What’s the point of having an inquest if you can’t do anything about it?” said Paul, 46, of Low Fell.

“It’s as if the last four years have all been a waste of time.

“It is not about the money.

“My mum and auntie lay inside those beds suffering for almost five days and still no-one is taking responsibility for it.”

Their bid to bring a charge of manslaughter due to negligence against the hotel management was thrown out by a Spanish judge. The family are now taking civil action in Spain.

A Thomas Cook Spokesperson said: “The thoughts of us all will always be with the family of Mrs Bowman. Despite doing our utmost to try to resolve matters directly with the family and their legal representatives over a long period of time, this wasn’t possible.”

Two Thomas Cook staff were cleared of negligent manslaughter earlier this month following the death of two children in Corfu from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a faulty boiler. But now they face a retrial.

Three hotel staff were jailed for seven years.

Janet Kerrigan´s 28-year-old lad David tripped in his hotel and hit his head in the tumble after a night out in Spanish resort Benidorm.

The security guard was rushed to hospital in Alicante – where medics found he had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Last night devastated Janet, 47, revealed he´d spent just one night in the Costa Blanca town when the freak accident happened. And she sobbed as she recalled her last words to David before he set off on the two-week break with a pal were “be careful”.

She said: “It´s every mother´s worst nightmare.

“David was such a wonderful, joking, playful son. I can´t believe he´s gone.

“The last time I spoke to him I told him, ´You look after yourself, you be careful.´

“We never expected this to happen. I couldn´t believe it when we got the call to say there had been an accident.”

David´s grieving sister Tracey – who called her brother her “soulmate” – caught the next available flight to Spain after the accident last month.

But Janet, who had never been abroad, suffered an agonising wait before she could travel while her passport application was processed.

She said: “When I arrived at the hospital, I was shocked to see David. He was full of tubes, he looked so helpless.”

David, of Hamilton, spent two weeks in a coma before he lost his fight for life earlier this month. And grieving Janet and Tracey had to borrow money to fly out to bring David´s body home as he did not have any travel insurance. His funeral was held last Friday.

Tracey, 26, said: “David was my soulmate. We had the same group of friends so we hung out together all the time. I feel like I´ve lost my best friend.

“We also had to borrow money to pay for our flights out there to bring him home. It´s been terrible.”

Janet added: “David had his whole life in front of him. I feel so lost without him.

“His best friend had asked him to be a godfather to their wee baby. He was proud of that.”

The runner is said to have almost reached the finishing line when he was seen to appear dizzy. Collapsing to the floor, he was immediately attended by emergency services teams who attempted to revive the man. Resuscitation attempts continued for more than 30 minutes in the field hospital set up near the finishing line, before he was transferred to hospital by ambulance, where the victim was confirmed dead.

At the same field hospital, a runner of 38 years of age was treated for heat stroke and had been intubated and taken to Gregorio Marañón hospital in a serious condition. A third, of around 25 years of age, was also taken to hospital in a serious condition after suffering a heart attack just past the finish line.

The rest of those seen at the emergency services have only suffered dizziness, fainting or weakness. The temperature was not excessively high at 9:00, when the race began from the Retiro park, but the thermometer was climbing on a sunny morning and reached 18 degrees within two hours.

The Kenyan Allan Ndiwa and the Moroccan Kambuchia Soud, Huesca resident for five years, were the winners of the Half Marathon of Madrid.
