Spanish media began reporting late Monday that the federation would clear Contador, despite having tested positive during last summer’s Tour de France, which he won, for a tiny amount of the banned substance clenbuterol.

Federation president Juan Carlos Castano told CNN that Contador was informed he had been cleared, and added the federation cannot publish the decision on its website due to Spain’s law protecting confidential data on individuals.

“Alberto Contador has been officially cleared by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation and has been authorized to return to competition immediately. If everything goes well, the rider will take the start, tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Volta ao Algarve” a race in southern Portugal, Contador’s press office said in a statement, received by CNN.

Officers from Almería seized 4.2 kilograms of cocaine, a handgun, ammunition, anabolic steroids, two cars, a night vision monitor, 3,000 euro in cash, fifteen mobile phones and a collection of documents and materials believed to have been used by the criminal gang.

The investigation, which began several months ago, focused initially on the ring leaders of the organization based in Almería, who would provide drugs to smaller time dealers who then sold the drugs directly to the public.

As part of the investigation, officers were able to identify two people who were at the very top of the supply chain, with contacts in Madrid, who in turn fed drugs to similar networks across Spain.

During the course of the investigation it was determined that the organization used so called “mules”, people posing as tourists who would travel to South America by air, to then return to Spain carrying the drugs.

On Christmas Eve, the gang attempted to smuggle 2.5 kilograms of cocaine into the country by this method, believing that there would be fewer checks by law enforcement agents. Officers based at Madrid-Barajas Airport intercepted the courier and arrested a Spanish citizen on a flight from Colombia, via Frankfurt, in which they seized the drugs, which were hidden in bags coated with tracing paper and foam and hidden inside a suitcase.

Before the arrest, the detainee had been approached in the arrivals hall by a Colombian citizen, responsible for organizing the trip, who was also arrested.

A few days after the first arrests in Madrid, the investigation led officers towards Almería, where it was believed that a shipment of drugs had already been made. A surveillance operation was launched in the village of Tabernas, in which the suspect vehicle was detected and followed by the officers to a petrol filling station in Roquetas de Mar, at which point they intercepted the vehicle.

The officers proceeded to arrest the driver, who was accompanied by his 13 year old grandson, and located three packets of cocaine weighing 1.5 kilograms hidden inside the vehicle.

That arrest resulted in further investigations, which triggered the arrest of other members of the organization, resulting in a total of eight arrests being made in the town of Roquetas de Mar.

The operation was conducted by officers of the Drugs Unit and Organized Crime (UDYCO) from Almeria, in collaboration with the Narcotics Group of Madrid-Barajas Airport.

Officers say they seized 500kg of hashish hidden in a large quantity of airconditioning gear.

The men are alleged to be connected with three Brits arrested when 600kg of hashish was seized near Alicante last month.

The operation targeted the resort of San Antonio, where police believed a number of British drug traffickers had based themselves.

Officers from the Civil Guard, Spain´s paramilitary police force, searched several houses in San Antonio and discovered quantities of ecstasy, cocaine and other drugs.

A spokesman for the police told Sky News: “A pile of Britons have been detained.”

He added that as the operation was ongoing, he was unable to give details about the arrests.

The Foreign Office also confirmed there had been a number of Britons arrested on the island.

It is believed that British drugs gangs have been operating in Ibiza for many years as the Balearic island is a popular holiday destination for young people from across Europe.

Ibiza is famed for its club culture, giving the gangs a ready-made market for their designer drugs.

A drug smuggling ring which brought cocaine worth up to half a billion pounds into Greater Manchester hidden in metal pipes has been brought to justice.

Five men now face jail for their part in importing the drug from Spain to a warehouse in Trafford Park.

They were caught last summer when one haul, worth £25m, was swapped for flour by customs officers and then secretly followed to its destination.

Darrol Sedgwick, 43, of Foxdenton Drive, Stretford, was found guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine, after a three-week trial at Manchester crown court.

Carl Smith, 40, of St Mary’s Road, Moston; Lee Smith, 42, of Mount Road, Middleton; Darren Lowe, 31, of Woodstock Road, Moston; and Craig Loveday, 41, of Prince Street, Rochdale, all pleaded guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine at an earlier hearing.

Carl Smith played a ‘central role in the conspiracy’ prosecutors said, operating a courier service transporting the Class A drug into Britain.

Lee Smith, Lowe and Loveday were associates of Carl Smith and all played a lesser part in the conspiracy. They will be sentenced at a later date.

Customs officers found 80kg of cocaine in a lorry at Dover on July 20, last year.

They replaced the drugs with flour and allowed the vehicle to continue to Trafford Park. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) then planned to pounce when the gang went to collect the stash.

But the gang grew suspicious when the delivery was delayed by 24 hours – so staged a ‘robbery’ to steal their own cocaine.

Vincent Martin, 39, of Oakcliff Road, Baguley, and Dean Denton, 31, of Kearsley Road, Crumpsall, were hired for the raid.

Both admitted attempted robbery at an earlier hearing, but said they did not know what they were stealing.

After the gang realised the drugs had been replaced, they dumped the flour in the River Irk in Middleton.

Prosecutor Paul Mitchell said the drugs imported during the scheme would have ‘a street value in excess of £500m’.

After the case, Steve Baldwin, head of investigations in the North West for SOCA, said: “If you come on to our radar we will pursue you relentlessly, track you down and put you behind bars.”

Darren Spensley, 34, of Poplar Grove, Ramsbottom, Bury; Duncan Rimmer, 52, of Devoke Avenue, Worsley, Salford; and Steven Smith, 38, of Heywood Old Road, Middleton, were all cleared of conspiracy to import cocaine.
